Pamela believes in offering a variety of yoga so each person can find their own way. You will love EOM, especially if you are newer to yoga, or craving a more spiritual and meaningful practice.
If you are new to yoga, been away from your practice for awhile, or recovering from physical situations, you will love this class. It’s a teaching class to get you into proper form. You will learn all about the philosophy of yoga, connect with your breath, relax, de-stress, and feel nourished.
All yoga is a derivative of Hatha Yoga. “Ha” means “sun” and “tha” means moon. Hatha yoga is a balanced approach to integration of the solar and lunar channels of the body. It’s an exploration in the duality of the mind. You will experience movement, breathwork, and right messaging based in the 8 limbs of yoga. Some Hatha classes add one pointed focus, withdrawing the sense, and meditation taking Hatha yoga to a new level…the Royal Path of yoga or Raja Yoga. Expect long holds and strength building.
Vinyasa means “composition” and in yoga is treating the body as a vessel for the breath. Each breath is linked with movement. An inhale brings the arms up to the sky, an exhale brings the hands to the earth. Just sit and feel yourself breath for a minute and imagine putting that breath with movement. You’d be moving pretty fast, right? In Vinyasa, yoga becomes a dance of sorts.
Generally, the class starts with a warm up on the hands and knees and then moves to standing and a sequence of Sun Salutations. Even in a hatha class, you are going to Vinyasa through Sun Salutations. The class can be quite challenging and is a work out so if you are new to yoga, you will experience learning curve of 5 – 7 times until you know the routine which varies a bit from teacher to teacher.
The great news is it is not as complicated as learning to dance! Vinyasa can be slow, fast, or hot so if you are newer, pick slow.
We offer many specialty classes designed to elicit certain effects in the body, mind, and spirit. You are encouraged to come to our specialty classes once a week as a compliment to our Hatha and Vinyasa classes. In Hatha and Vinyasa, you are going to move the body to get in shape.
Kundalini Yoga is a very unique form of yoga. The teacher wears white, but you never have to. Each class begins by “tuning in” with the Adi Mantra, or the “first mantra.” You can join in or listen. You then do a warm up which varies. Next you move into a “kriya.” A kriya is a designated set of postures designed to elicit a very specific effect in the body, mind, or spirit. After you kriya, you will lie down for a rest.
When you sit up you will experience a meditation of 3 – 31 minutes depending on the class. The meditations generally involve sitting in easy pose (see the image), placing your hands in a certain way, and focusing on various points of the body, movements of the body, breath, music, or mantra and sometimes all of those.
Our teachers are all certified teachers in Kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. Kundalini yoga can be quite difficult. The good news is if you find you can’t do a pose or hold it for the specified time, you simply imagine you are in the pose, try to stay with the breath, and you still receive the benefit. We call it “leaning in the right direction.” Energetically, Kundalini is the creative force of the universe or the Shakti, or if you are Christian, the Holy Guost.
Urban Zen and Restorative are similar, but different in that Urban Zen is a branded and trademarked practice inspired by the designer and yogini, Donna Karen. You can click through the link below for the entire philosophy. Both classes are restorative in nature and considered “yoga therapy.”
You will experience a grounded class that begins with a very gentle warm up. You next move to various poses on the floor where you are propped up on props and covered with blankets and eye pillows. You may experience reiki (hands on healing), aromatherapy (use of oils and if you don’t want them you just tell the teacher), nutritional messaging, and mindfulness (brain training).
It is perfect for our stressed lives and if you are feeling down or chaotic. It allows the body to heal.
Anahata is the Sanskrit word for the heart chakra. The word means unhurt, unbeaten, unstruck. Anahata Yoga was designed to bring students to a higher level of awareness – to deeply connect, expand, and awaken their hearts: through asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation. Mixed levels.
“The Anahata style opens the heart chakra, allowing more awareness and greater connection with our hearts. We learn to listen more to our hearts, live more in our hearts and express more from our hearts, making our hearts our inner temple. When we make our hearts our inner temple, it will be ready to merge into the cosmic heart, our individualized souls ready to merge into the infinite spirit, and we can fulfill the main purpose of yoga – union – oneness!”
~ Ana Costa, founder of Anahata Yoga
This healing class combines the practices of Yoga and Qigong. Qigong is self-initiated health and wellness practice consisting of a combination of movement, self-massage, meditation, and breathing. Mindfulness, a key component of meditation, produces a heightened awareness of the present moment.
Qigong has been called “Chinese Yoga”, just as Yoga has been referred to as “Indian Qigong”. Qigong can be considered as a combination of a number of Yoga (the science of self-realization) and Ayuerveda (the science of self-healing) practices. Both Yoga and Qigong are excellent for focused stretching, strengthening, and health maintenance.
The overall theme of this class is helping your body to remove blockages in your personal energy and increase the flow of chi/prana. This helps you to heal on all levels: physical, mental and Spiritual.
Only led by Pamela Quinn, this class begins with traditional practices of Kundalini, emerges into a hatha/flow class, and ends with a short kriya and Kundalini meditation. Each class is themed. It can be quite intense either physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
The Bowspring is a curvy, dynamic, and open posture that aligns the body in a position of mindful readiness. It is a natural curvy shape of the body that puts a spring in your step, and uplifts your mood, while toning and strengthening all sides. With this dynamically balanced posture, the breath can move freely without inhibition bringing a new level of vitality and energetic freedom. Mixed Levels. Only led by Sandy Kingsley
